EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
