Right-leaning responses to the limited release of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and image appear in some of the materials, the widespread redactions raise significant questions about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded increased transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Commentators Swing Behind the Release
However, some conservative commentators and Trump allies swung firmly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely censored, and many of the men depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But a few are not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, enabled some conservative figures to go on the offensive.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding those documents for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted following the release, especially when compared with the loud demands for transparency that preceded the legislative approval to pass a bill mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were provided hard-copy binders of files that contained no new data.
