The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like standard biological terror, but beneath Together exists a intense meditation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when the couple transition from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters face the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
