Trump's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's True Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual danger confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this time, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
