Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the right to question particular decisions from the official, mirroring the protocol currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
